Army veteran on mission to keep others from attempting suicide

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -

An Army veteran who once tried to commit suicide  is now on a mission to keep others from doing the same.

25-year-old Andrew O'Brien is an Army vet from Texas who nearly died from a drug overdose in 2010.

Thursday, he came to the Naval hospital at Camp Lejeune to tell his story of attempted suicide. He said he tried to take his own life because he thought he would be doing his family a favor, only to realize later how much they loved him and would have missed him.

He urged hospital staff and patients to resist the perceived stigma of mental health treatment and get help.

Some people in the audience had a personal connection to his suicide story.

"I actually walked in on my friend about to commit suicide. She called me and said she was going to give me all of her stuff. And I ran over to her house and I walked in right before she was about to," said one audience member.

The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates an average of 22 veterans take their own lives every day.
