For more than 60 years a narrow oval has been a staple in the South's rich history of Auto Racing. Grown from the red clay it sits on, Martinsville Speedway has gone from an idea to an ideal track. And for the last quarter century the man piloting that vision is Speedway President Clay Campbell. Campbell grew up at the historic half mile viewing the changing world of NASCAR by the side of his grandfather, Mr. H. Clay Earles.  Clay credits his grandfather for teaching him most things about running the speedway and racing in general. But President isn't Campbell's only title. He is a driver, giving him common ground with those superstars that will strap in on Sunday. Speedway PR Director Mike Smith says that having Clay as a President means they are working for the guy who has the most knowledge and tradition in all of racing .More important than anything, the racetrack that fuels the heart of the man at the helm, fuels the economy of a community that he's not ashamed of calling his home. Clay called this issue--personal--and driver Jeff Burton , who hails from nearby South Boston, gives Campbell credit for keeping Martinsville not only relevant, but at the cutting edge of NASCAR so that the series continues to come to the historic half mile track.
