UPDATE: Officer involved shooting in Giles leaves one dead

GILES COUNTY, VA -

10:15 a.m. update:

Police have released more information about an officer involved shooting that happened Saturday evening in Narrows near Newberry Ford.

Investigators say a man confronted officers, shots were fired during the incident.

The man, who's name has not been released at this time, then left the scene.  When he stopped, shots were fired again.  He died at the scene.

There was another passenger in the vehicle, that person was not injured.  No officers or law enforcement agents were hurt.

The Giles County Sheriff's Office and Virginia State Police are still investigating the incident.

9:45 p.m. update:

We are still waiting for a police update.

Streets are shutdown at the intersection of Thomas Road and North Main Street near Newberry Ford in Pearisburg.

8:20 p.m. update:

State police are on the scene with an armored vehicle along with Giles County Police and Sheriff's Office and Virginia Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

8:00 p.m. update:

The Sheriff's Office tells WSLS reporter Erin Brookshier it will be more than an hour before they make a statement.

Virginia State Police and the Giles County Sheriff's Office are on the scene investigating.

7 p.m. update:

We are following a developing story out of Giles County.

Multiple police units are blocking off an area near Newberry Ford in Pearisburg near Routes 100 and 460.

The Giles County Sheriff is expected to update us soon on what is going on. 

We received multiple reports from WSLS viewers about shots fired in the area. Phone calls started into the newsroom around 5 p.m.

We have crews on the scene and will update this story as we get more information.
