Scam moving in as people move out

Posted: Updated:
A scam is moving in on people who are moving out.

A couple years after going away a scheme to get money out of people changing their address has resurfaced.

“One thing scam artists can be very good at, is charging you for something that you can get for free yourself," said North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper.

Cooper says some commercial websites claim to have a connection with the post office or offer services they claim are better than the postal service. The website then charges the customer anywhere from $10 to $30 dollars, for a service Cooper says is free or just $1 online.

"The post offices they have a system set up and a package when you move that will forward your mail to your new address and change you address. You don't have to pay any money to do this," said Cooper.

Cooper advises customers to make sure they change their address on the official postal service website or just go into your local office.
