Attendance drops at NC State Fair after incident

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Attendance at the North Carolina State Fair was the lowest since 2009, according to figures released Monday by the Fair.

A total of 927,563 people attended the event, which ended Monday. That was down from the 965,297 that attended last year. More than 1 million attended in 2011 and 2010.

The State Fair began opening on Thursday in 2008.

Fair attendance on Friday and Saturday was down more than 11 percent compared to the corresponding days last year. While that may have been partly due to colder nighttime temperatures, Thursday night's dramatic injuries at the Vortex ride probably contributed to the decline, said spokesman Brian Long.

"I do understand that this incident may have given some people pause," Long told the Associated Press.

Attendance Friday was 82,163, a drop of about 10,000 from the previous second Fridays of the Fair run.

And Saturday's attendance of 122,223 was well below the 139,484 from the final Saturday the previous year.
