Family wants answers after fair worker crushed by ride

Posted: Updated:

A North Carolina State fair worker injured Monday morning remains in critical condition at WakeMed Hospital.

The worker has been identified as Anesto Newell.

Police said Newell was injured while dismantling a ride called "Vortex." The State Fair had two rides called "Vortex" and fair officials said the one involved in Monday's incident was not the same one involved in last week's incident that injured five people.

WNCN talked to Newell's family at the hospital on Tuesday.

"There was a wire snap and then a big boom," recalled Tywan Newell, Anesto's brother. He and his wife were also taking down rides at the fair when the accident happened.

The ride crushed Anesto's lower body. They say his back was broken in three places, his pelvis shattered, he broke his left leg, his ankle, and suffered several other injuries.

"I didn't want to see my brother die," said Tywan. "At the same time my brother is all mangled up, I'm thinking, what am I going to tell momma"

Anesto and Tywan's mother was already in the hospital for a separate heart issue.

"I'm angry, I'm real angry," said Jean Quartey, their mother. She says she wants to know how such a major accident could happen. "I'm going to get some accountability," she said.

Fair officials still don't know how the accident happened. Tywan says since the case is still under investigation, the ride should have never been taken off of the property until they figured out what went wrong.

As of Tuesday night, Anesto was still in critical condition in the ICU.
