Metro Jackson American Heart Association Heart Walk to Save Lives

Posted: Updated:

More than 3,000 area residents are expected to join the Heart Walk on November 2, 2013 to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers. The annual event activities begin at 8 a.m. with the walk starting at 9:15 a.m. at the Mississippi State Capitol.  More than $300,000 has already been raised by participants this year, making it one of the most successful fundraisers for the organization in recent years.

The non-competitive, three-mile walk and 1 mile survivor route, is free to the public and includes teams of employees from local companies, along with friends and family members of all ages.

Heart Walk participants will experience three “communities” that feature relevant resources and activities.

The “My Heart” community will:

Foster hope by bringing together people with similar experiences, sorrows and fears.

Allow people to acknowledge their losses and pay tribute to loved ones.

Provide an opportunity to honor survivors and individuals whose family and friends have been impacted by heart disease and stroke.

Give survivors hope that they can influence their own and their loved ones’ destinies by connecting risk factors to a personal loss.

The “My Life” community will:

Inspire participants to make changes in their daily behavior that reduce risk for heart disease and stroke, such as increasing physical activity and making heart-healthy choices a part of daily life.

Inspire participants to make a long-term commitment in the fight against heart disease and stroke by volunteering for the American Heart Association.

The “My Community” area will:

Celebrate individuals and companies that have made significant changes to lead a heart-healthy life (e.g., by being more active, losing weight, etc.) or encourage employees to lead a healthier life.

Highlight the successful fund-raising efforts of individuals and companies.

The Metro Jackson Heart Walk will have a special “Kid’s Zone” area for children to enjoy.

Sportacus from the popular Sprout television show  “LazyTown” will be on hand to get kids and parents jumping, moving, and warmed up for the walk.

There will also be giveaways from local companies and local entertainment for the entire family. This will be a morning of fun and wellness.

Individuals who walk at the Metro Jackson Heart Walk on November 2, 2013, are also invited to  CARRY A TORCH in memory or in honor of someone you love that has been impacted by either of these diseases.  Receive a torch to carry along the Heart Walk route by making a minimum donation of $10 to the American Heart Association at this year's walk.

Research has shown walking is the single most effective form of exercise to achieve heart health. The benefits of walking and moderate physical activity for as little as 30 minutes each day can help reduce the risk of heart disease. More than 1 out of 4 deaths in Mississippi are due to heart disease, according to the National Vital Statistics Report, 2009.

The Metro Jackson Heart Walk is sponsored nationally by Subway and Jenny Craig. The success of the Heart Walk is due in part to the Local My Heart My Life Platform Sponsor, St. Dominic’s as well as other local sponsors and participating companies including, Health Management Associates, C Spire Wireless, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi, Atmos Energy, Baptist Health Systems, Community Trust Bank, Entergy, Horne, LLP, Saks Fifth Avenue, FOX 40 News, Miss 103, Lamar outdoor advertising, the Jackson Free Press and others.
