Update: 1 dead, 2 others injured in Kinston shooting

Posted: Updated:
KINSTON, N.C. - Crime reports show the man who died in Tuesday's Kinston neighborhood shooting had a gunshot wound to the back of his head.

Two other people were hurt and police are still working to track down the people responsible.

It happened Tuesday around 1:25 p.m. at 205 East Capitola Avenue near its intersection with McLewean Street. 9 On Your Side's Katie Banks was the first on the scene.

Police later identified the body as 20-year-old James Arthur Franklin. Crime reports list him as an occupant of the home where the shooting happened, but his family later told 9 On Your Side he lived in Greensboro and the house belongs to his grandmother. Police responding to the scene found him laying in the front passenger seat of a car with a gunshot wound to the back of the head.

EMS crews transported the two other victims, 19-year-old Dexter Bradshaw and 20-year-old Taishianna Hall, to area hospitals for treatment. Bradshaw went to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, where he's listed in fair condition. Police reports say he was in the back seat of the same car. Hall went to Lenoir Memorial Hospital, where doctors treated and released her Tuesday night. Reports say she was standing on the front porch of the home when the shooting happened and also had a gunshot wound.

Franklin's family says Bradshaw and Hall were best friends. They say Hall and Franklin had been dating since middle school and were living together in Greensboro. They were in town visiting when the drive-by shooting happened.

A neighbor's home was also hit by gunfire. She and her husband were inside at the time.

It's unclear what prompted the shootings and police have not revealed a potential motive yet.

Kinston Police, deputies with the Lenoir County Sheriff's Office, and North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers, and EMS crews all responded to the scene. About two dozen lawmen were on the scene minutes after the call came in.

So far, there are no arrests in today's shootings. Police say they're looking for at least one gunman on charges of murder and non-negligent manslaughter, aggravated assault, and criminal damage to property (vandalism).

There was a second shooting in front of St. James AME Church, but it's not known if that shooting is related to the earlier incident. Police say no one was hurt in the second shooting.

Call Kinston Public Safety at (252) 939-3224 if you have any information about the incident.

Stay with 9 On Your Side for more details as they become available.
