Ruleville Church Gets Marker For Civil Rights Work

Posted: Updated:
Ruleville, MS - William Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Ruleville will receive a marker on the Mississippi Freedom Trail on Nov. 16.

The Mississippi Development Authority Division of Tourism designated the church as 14th marker on the trail.

Hattie Jordan, member of the Fannie Lou Hamer Committee, tells The Bolivar Commercial (http://bit.ly/1cIleeX ) that in the 1960s the church opened its doors to Civil Right workers to have meetings.

Jordan says the workers held citizenship classes to teach individuals about voting and the importance of voting. They also worked to get people registered to vote. The workers also attended Sunday services.

Jordan says Ruleville officials revoked the church's free water and tax exemptions in the 1960s because the building was no longer being used exclusively for worship.
