Drive-by shooting victim's mother speaks out

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Pitt County deputies say a gunman targeted a Greenville home during an overnight drive-by shooting, injuring a 13-year-old girl.

It happened around 1 o'clock Tuesday morning on Caleb Street. A mother, Cherkaryan Barrett, and her three children, ages 1, 7 and 13, were inside at the time, when someone fired several rounds with a high-powered rifle into the house.
    
A bullet hit the 13-year-old girl while she was asleep in her bed. Doctors expect her to be okay, and no one else was hurt.
    
9 On Your Side talked with a woman who lives across the street from where it all happened. She says she heard gunshots and, at first, thought they were firecrackers.

"It just makes you think you never know what's going to happen. But it really makes it scarier to be out here now when it's really right at your back door almost," said Angela Toon, a mother and grandmother.

Detectives say they do not believe this shooting was random, and instead believe a gunman targeted the house. They think the shooter was aiming for a family acquaintance, not the mother or children.
