A consortium, including Mississippi State University, has received a five-year, $25 million grant to boost soybean production across Africa.
The Soybean Innovation Laboratory is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development.
The project will enable small producers to share in the rising demand for soybeans. The research also will enable low-resource countries to address problems of food insecurity and protein malnutrition.
Four other universities and 10 governmental and non-governmental agencies are involved in the project.
MSU's International Institute helped form the team and connect them with researchers at other universities.
While SIL researchers will work in Ghana, Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi and Ethiopia, MSU's team will focus on nine villages in Ghana and nine in Mozambique.
Research will be in genetic improvement, enhanced crop productivity and quality, nutrition, and socio-economics.
