JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -

Medical examiners in Onslow County are taking a closer look at a body found badly burnt inside a home.

Law enforcement officers found the body Tuesday morning at 264 Parnell Road in Hubert.

On Wednesday they identified that body as that of 41-year-old Matthew Joseph Underwood

Officers found Underwood's body in the process of extinguishing a fire at the house.

The Onslow county medical examiner conducted an autopsy on Wednesday.

Neighbors say Underwood was a retired corpsman who worked at a hospital at Camp Lejeune. They say the neighborhood is usually quiet.

"That's suspicious to me, but until we get anything from law enforcement, there's nothing to really speculate on," said neighbor Ryan DeWeerd.

The State Bureau of Investigations and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives are investigating.
