Coin Toss Decides Election

Posted: Updated:
STONEVILLE, N.C. -- A Triad election came down to coin toss to determine the winner of a town council seat in Stoneville.

Candidates Billy Farris and Jerry Smith were tied after the general election, each receiving 114 votes. The Rockingham County Board of Elections ordered a recount. The recount resulted in another tie and in order to break it, the board decided to flip a coin. After the coin toss' tails showing, Billy Farris was declared the winner.

According to the Rockingham Board of Elections, state law says an election with fewer than 1,000 votes that ends in a tie can be decided by a random method. Both Smith and Farris were incumbents. After the coin toss, Smith offered his congratulations. Farris will be sworn in next month.
