FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

Five days after Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines, some Filipinos in Fayetteville are still waiting to hear from their loved ones back in that country.

At the Philippines Store on Yadkin Road, Rose Bartlett has had no trouble reaching her family in the Philippines after the story, but for Victoria Thomas at the store it's a different story.

"I called them that day, and I cannot reach them anymore," Thomas said.

She has family on the island that was hit the hardest. She heard from a friend that her family is okay, but she has been trying to reach them directly online and by phone.

"Every day if I have time after work, before I go to bed, I'm always calling them, but [I haven't reached them]," she said.

Store customer Carmen Bost still has family and rental property in the Philippines. She too finally got good news Wednesday morning, but she worries about the thousands of people like Thomas's family who may have survived but still need food.

"This is the worst. This is really the worst of the worst," Bost said. "I hope and pray for them. That's a lot of people to be in that situation."

So she, Bartlett and other Filipino business owners in Fayetteville will be donating to the Red Cross. Filipino business owner Esther Thompson is also working to get more donations from the Filipino community Fayetteville. She said she will also donate a percentage of the proceeds from her businesses, the Blue Moon Café and the Fabulous Finds boutique.
