Hundreds of families will have a hot meal Thanksgiving after a turkey giveaway in Garner Thursday.
Butterball held the fourth annual Community of Hope Butterball Turkey Giveaway at First Baptist Church in Garner. Local businesses also contributing fixings.
The chief executive officer of Butterball, Rod Brenneman, addressed the group and helped with the giveaway.
The event was part of Butterball's effort to give away about 1,200 turkeys before Thanksgiving. About 715 will go to Triangle families in need and the others to North Carolina-based military families.
Butterball gave away about 200 turkeys Thursday and will donate more Nov. 21 at the Archway Foundation in Clayton at 2 p.m.
One 85-year-old woman called the gift "a big help to me."
Amy White of Community of Hope Ministries said, "All of our clients will not only get a turkey but also a bag full of Stove Top stuffing, green beans and cranberry sauce."
Butterball is based in Garner. The company, on its website, says it accounts for 20 percent of the turkey production in the United States. It has 5,000 employees in its five plants and corporate offices.
Butterball says its 675,000 square foot plant in Mount Olive is the world's largest turkey plant.
