Maroons Tyree Pulls Double Duty as Local Sports Reporter

Posted: Updated:

The Roanoke College Maroons Volleyball team captain is senior Mackenzie Tyree. The Lord Botetourt product is who coach Blair Trail calls her leader on the court, so with the Maroons have a stellar season--advancing to the ODAC semifinals for the first time since 2009--you wouldn't believe anything was out of the ordinary. But it was. Mackenzie got permission to miss all of the Maroons contests on Friday nights--to cover high school football for Fox 21/27's Ten O'clock news. She also contributed to WSLS's long running 1st and 10 show that airs after the Fox broadcast. It was a tough decision for Tyree, who is a fierce competitor dating back to her days in the backcourt for Coach Chuck Pound's Cavaliers in Daleville. It was equally tough for Coach Trail, but she understood that this was MacKenzie's possible future career choice. The Maroons finished 19-11 on the season.
