Greenville church gives away more than 1,100 coats

GREENVILLE, N.C. - On Saturday, Koinonia Christian Center Church gave away more than 1,100 coats and 800 shoes.

After having to cancel their annual Harvest Festival, the Greenville church decided to use its resources to hold a coat and shoe giveaway for the community.

People could register online, call the church,  or simply walk in.

Church officials say though the giveaway didn't start until 10a.m. people starting lining up as early as 7a.m.

"That just  shows you the level of need in our community, and that's what are church strives to do, is be a community church.  To be some  place to say you know what Christ cares about you, you know whatever state you're in, whatever is going on he cares; and to use the blessings that he's given us to help our community," said KCC Bishop Rosie O'neal.

While this the first time the church has held the large of clothing giveaway, O'neal says they are thinking about trying to make is another part of their outreach.

" I think we'll just incorporate it. As God blesses us, you know you can't meet every need, but  we  do the very best that we can and as much as he blesses us with we intend to turn it out and bless the community," said O'neal.

The event didn't stop at the church. O'neal says they worked with Angel Cops and also gave away insulated jackets, blankets, and food to the homeless.

Happening this weekend, Koinonia Christian Center Church is sponsoring a coat and shoe giveaway.
     
Saturday from 10 to 3, people can come get a pair of shoes or a new coat.
     
So far, there's about 800 people registered for items.
     
Walk-ins are welcome and will be served as long as supplies last.
     
Church members say they wanted to meet the needs of the community, ahead of this year's upcoming cold winter.
