Scramble underway to adjust to Obamacare changes

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON - State Insurance commissioners, health care companies and Congress are scrambling today, trying to adjust to a sudden change in the Affordable Care Act, just weeks before it’s supposed to be implemented.

President Obama sat down at the White House with the CEOs of some of the largest Health Providers, trying to gain support for his plan to allow consumers to keep their canceled policies.

“We want to make sure that Americans have good solid coverage,” said President Obama.

On Capitol Hill House Republicans passed their own fix to the Affordable Care Act.

“Working families across America were counting on this president to keep his promise,” said Eric Cantor, (R-VA).

The bill, sponsored by Michigan Republican Fred Upton, passed mostly along party lines. It goes further than the President’s fix, allowing insurance companies to sell plans to consumers not previously covered.
Democrats say the bill is designed to destroy the Federal Health Care exchanges.

“Now they are trying to do so with a Trojan horse they call the Upton Bill,” said Steny Hoyer, (D-MD).

Many insurers say there’s not enough time to implement the White House plan of resubmitting the cancelled policies, before the Affordable Care Act’s December 15th deadline.

“A logistical nightmare. Now politically, the president is doing nothing more than throwing this hot potato of policy cancelations into the laps of the insurance companies,” said Robert Laszewski, Health Policy & Strategy Associates.

The Health Insurance Commissioners from both Washington state and Arkansas have said they will not allow health care providers to offer cancelled plans to consumers.

39 House Democrats voted for the Republican bill to allow consumers to keep their health care coverage. It’s the most Democrats to cross the aisle and vote for a GOP fix to the Affordable Care Act.
