Jacksonville police alert public to Internet scams

Posted: Updated:
JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -

Internet scams are on the rise, and Jacksonville police say there are two in particular they want you to know about.

The first is a lottery scam. Police say that's when scammers send you a letter saying that you won a contest or that your rich relative died, and you can only collect the money by sending a fee.

The second scam is an anti-virus scam. That's when a pop up message appears on your computer screen saying a virus has been detected and you can have it removed by paying a fee.

"Use common sense, OK? Don't rush in to making a purchase," said Det. David Miltier of the Jacksonville Police Department. "If somebody calls you and tells you that you won $1000 and all you have to do is provide a small fee of $100, try to obtain some information from that person to whom you're going to send that."

Another scam Det. Miltier says people should be aware of is the grandparent scam. That's when someone calls pretending to be a police officer and says your grandson has been arrested and you need to send money in order to post bond.

Police say if you become a victim of scam, always report it to police. It could help someone else from becoming a victim to that same scam.
