JACKSON, MS -

The Detective Eric Smith Award was given out tonight to its first ever recipient.  We’re told this award honors outstanding service to law enforcement as exemplified by Detective Smith.

"It was a shock to me, and I really appreciate that the District Attorney and the sheriff's office who elected me for this award," expresses Sgt. Richard Brown, who accepted the award.

Brown is the sergeant over the department's investigations division.

"Being an investigator I have to speak for the victims because they can't speak for themselves," explains Brown.

This award is particularly special to Brown.  He knew Det. Smith, who was killed April 4th while interviewing a murder suspect at Jackson Police Headquarters.

"He laid down a foundation, I say, all investigations should try to do.  I’m proud to have it," Brown tells News Channel 12.

Sheriff Tyrone Lewis adds this award could not have gone to a better person.

"This is a very deserving award in the name of a very honorable person to be given to an honorable person," continues Sheriff Lewis.

We’re told this will be given out each year to any law enforcement in Hinds County.
