The holiday season is almost here, for many families in our area, it's a struggle just to put food on the table.
"It's real important this time of year to pack the pickup because Mississippi food network sees an increase in the number of people that need our services." says Marilyn Blackledge with the Mississippi Food Network
The News Channel 12 crew was scattered throughout the metro Sunday afternoon at four different Kroger locations to accept food and cash donations for the Mississippi Food Network at one of their biggest events of the year, Pack the Pickup.
"We're very thankful because if everybody gives a little bit, then all of a sudden we have enough to provide for all the families that are depending on us." says Blackledge
Volunteers from the community donated their time to help accept donations and stress the importance of giving.
"It's always great to give because its better to give than receive. Although we receive, we receive in order to give to others as well." says Londra Hunter, a volunteer
11-year old Dawson Wilkerson worked hard to get as many donations as possible.
He let us in on his strategy to maximize donations.
"I put a basket down and I put flyers in it and ask people if they have any cans or Ramen noodles or something like that to help pack up the truck." says Wilkerson
Blackledge tells us another reason maximizing donations is crucial this season is because of recent cuts to the snap program.
"It's $36. Ok, but that's a lot of money to a family already struggling"
"I just feel like if you have it to share, you ought to this time of year. Not everybody has it, so we ought to give back sometimes." says Justin Laplant, after donating four bags of groceries
