BEAUFORT, N.C. - A Newport man has pleaded guilty to burglary, kidnapping and an attempted sex offense involving a 3-year-old boy.

28-year-old David Lance Pereira made the plea on Thursday.

Deputies say Pereira broke into a home on Chatham Street in Newport and kidnapped the child through a window back in December 2010. Shortly after the boy’s mother called 911 to report her son missing, a concerned citizen called 911 to report that someone with a small child was knocking on doors asking for gas.

Deputies found Pereira and the child walking on Nine Mile Road in Newport partially clothed in very cold weather. Pereira was taken into custody and the child was taken to Carteret General Hospital.

Pereira was sentenced to a minimum of 18.4 years and maximum of 23.6 years in the NC Department of Corrections. He’s already been transferred  to the NC Department of Correction to being serving his sentence.
