Construction scam targets seniors in Kinston

Posted: Updated:
KINSTON, N.C. - Holiday shopping is here! That mean's everyone is looking for some extra cash, especially scammers.

This season, Kinston Police are warning seniors and be on the lookout for a construction scam.

Police say this latest scam involves four white men driving a black Dodge Dakota pickup truck with a ladder rack. Police say the men walk right up to homeowners’ front doors and claim to notice some much needed construction work.  The men will even climb on top of the roof lay some paper on it and say the construction will cost $3,500.

"That's a red flag, simply because if you are a reputable business you don’t drive around with four people in a truck looking for homes, seeing maybe that [a home] needs some work, [and] go knock on the door. That's not a reputable business to do something like that," said Kinston Public Safety Public Information Officer, Woody Spencer.

Eight-two-year-old George Washington Mumford he says scammers targeting anyone, especially his fellow seniors, makes him angry.

"Frustrates me, It makes me a little bit angry that some people, want something that belongs to someone else, and I resent that,” said Mumford.

When it comes to this latest construction scam, police advise the following:

1.)    Ask, how do they know your home needs work?
2.)    Ask if they have insurance.  If they do, ask them if they are bonded.
3.)    Ask to see their construction license, letterhead, or business card.
4.)    Beware of work vehicles with no company signs or logos on them.
5.)    If they ask for money up front to buy materials, it may be a sign of bad credit, so don’t give them any money up front.
6.)    Make sure you have a contract in writing.

Police say if you have a complaint about a contractor call 1(877) NO-SCAM or 1(877) 566-7226.
