WINDSOR, N.C. - People in Bertie County are trying to turn trash into cash for a community center.

Dozens of people came out to the Cashie Convention Center in Windsor to donate their recycled cans, bottles, and other plastic items to raise money for the proposed Hope Community Center.

Saturday’s fundraiser featured music and barbeque to entertain those dropping off their recyclables.

Hope Community Center organizer, Ishmael Muldrow was joined by several churches including Spring Hill Missionary Baptist Church, God's Community Bible Center, Apostolic Faith Church of God, and Weeping Mary Missionary Baptist church for Saturday’s event.

Muldrow says the total amount needed to create the community center is in the millions; however, he says he is reaching out to local government, businesses, and churches in the area for donations and ways to raise funds.

"We're at the beginning stages, but we feel like we are a strong people and hope Community Center of Bertie County will rise,” said Muldrow.
