Light rail plan would connect Chapel Hill, Durham

Posted: Updated:

Traveling by light rail through the Triangle is still a decade away - but you can see what it would be like on Wednesday.

Some fly-over video gave a sense of where the rail would go in Orange and Durham counties.

The 17-mile stretch starts at UNC Hospitals, goes to Duke University and downtown Durham and ends up at North Carolina Central University.

In the coming weeks, Triangle Transit will ask the Federal Transit Administration for the go-ahead to move forward.

An environmental review will then take two years, design up to four more years and  construction another three or four years.

"Being able to go from one end of that corridor to the other in about 35 or 36 minutes in about 10 years when the rest of the highway system might not be all that  smooth and easy to travel, hat's the reason why I think the local leadership business and elected and civic leadership has chosen to pursue this project," said David King, general manager of Triangle Transit.

Durham and Orange County voters approved a tax hike to pay for the light rail. Wake County has not yet put the idea to voters.

Over the next few years, much of the transit focus will be on improving bus service.
