Durham Rescue Mission serves hundreds of meals this Thanksgiving

DURHAM, N.C. -

The Durham Rescue Mission hosted its annual Thanksgiving Community Dinner Thursday morning.

The Durham Rescue Mission and volunteers cooked 120 turkeys Wednesday night and early Thursday morning in anticipation for a large crowd. The organization fed 478 people at its Men's campus on East Main Street.

Almost 500 people donated their time for this Thanksgiving tradition.

"I am filled with joy to see how our community has come together to provide this wonderful meal for those who are less fortunate," said Ernie Mills, The Durham Rescue Mission's CEO. "This event has brought together the 'have's' and the 'have not's' for a great meal and time of fellowship. Times are tough, but we all still have much to be thankful for," added Mills.

In addition, the mission handed out more than 4,000 articles of clothing and 653 bags of groceries. They also delivered 191 meals to Meals on Wheels.

This is the mission's second largest yearly event. In September, about 5,000 people attended the back to school event where free backpacks were given to children in need.
