Roanoke leaders discuss legislative agenda

Posted: Updated:

Roanoke City Council is meeting today with the school board and area legislators to talk about a few items of interest.

This morning they're meeting in the Roanoke city council chambers.

On the 2014 legislative agenda the city supports legislation that will enable the city to charge and collect a fee for the use of plastic shopping bags at retailers. The goal is to provide the city with a revenue source to fund clean-up of littering. They say these clean-up activities will help the city meet the mandated stormwater requirements and enhance the Star City. The city also supports the moratorium on uranium mining in the Commonwealth for public safety and public health.

On the agenda at 2 p.m. Roanoke city council will talk about giving city employees an extra day off this year. It's decided on a yearly basis. The city manager is recommending city council approve December 24th, Christmas eve, as an added day of holiday leave to recognize employees for their contributions during these challenging economic times.

Also on the agenda a resolution to urge the U.S. House of Representatives to adopt the marketplace fairness act by allowing states to streamline their sales tax laws and collect sales taxes directly from online retailers.
