Update State Trooper airlifted after multi-vehicle crash

The Virginia State Police are continuing their investigation into a two vehicle crash that involved a Virginia State Police cruiser and a Hot Springs volunteer fire department pumper Friday evening around 8:30 pm on Route 220 northbound near Route 39 in Bath County. Trooper G.W. Johnson Jr. was enroute to assist the Bath County Sheriff's office on a domestic call and had his emergency equipment activated at the time of the crash, as the trooper crested a hill the fire truck began to pull out of a side road onto Route 220 when it was  struck by the state police cruiser.

Trooper Johnson was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for injuries he sustained in the crash. The operator of the fire truck Robert Leon Burke, age 74, of Milliboro, Va. and a passenger Richard Mason Cauthorn III, age 65, of Milliboro, Va. were both transported by ambulance to Bath Community Hospital for injuries they sustained.

The Ford Crown Victoria that was being operated by Trooper Johnson was totaled in the crash.
