KNIGHTDALE, N.C. -

A fire broke out at a Knightdale home Friday afternoon – and this was no ordinary call for the Knightdale fire chief.

This time, the house was his own.

Authorities responded to a fire at 100 Maplewood Drive after the son of Fire Chief Tim Guffey called 911 reporting a fire.

Guffey said his son walked in the front door after arriving home from school to hear the smoke detectors going off.

Crews arrived to see heavy smoke coming from the home, Guffey said.

"I've been in the fire service many years and don't recall a call like that," Guffey said. "I got here and did the size up we normally do other than throwing in that it was my residence."

The home sustained heavy heat and smoke damage to the second floor, Guffey said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

But there was some good news - the entire family, and the family dog, were safe.
