After more than a century, prisoners in Mississippi will no longer have conjugal visits. Corrections Commissioner Chris Epps says he will stop the program January 31, 2014.
Epps says he has the authority to make the change, despite State Rep. Richard Bennett, of Long Beach, planning to introduce a bill during the next legislative session to end the program.
Bennett says he was shocked to learn babies have been conceived during conjugal visits between two parents who are both serving time behind bars.
Epps says only married inmates, on their best behavior, are permitted conjugal visits. He believes it reduces sexual assault among prisoners and helps keep families together.
