Common Core Causing Controversy

By Ross Adams -
The debate over common core is heating up in Mississippi, following Governor Bryant’s executive order yesterday on the controversial education curriculum.
And a state senator is planning to introduce legislation that would throw out common core and force schools to start all over.
The program is a set of common standards that a majority of the states adopted a few years ago.
The goal is to get students better prepared for the next grade level, with rigorous requirements they are supposed to have learned at the end of each school year.
The Clinton public school district, like most around the state, has already started implementing common core in the classroom.
The instructional material for students is developed by teachers, according to Clinton asst. superintendent Tim Martin.
Bryant's Monday executive order affirms the state's right to establish its own standards and curricula, without interference from federal officials in Washington, D.C.
In addition to politicians, teachers are critical of common core, saying it requires them to do a lot more prep work for class and forces them to teach to the test.
