Jackson State University football fans agree there were more ups than downs for the school's program during Coach Rick Comegy's eight years in charge. But after two consecutive losses in the SWAC Championship, some fans believe the timing is right.
"We've seen some mistakes that were made that cost us games that shouldn't have been made," says State Senator and JSU Alum, Kenneth Wayne Jones. "And that could be anybody though! But it's always going to be put back on the coach."
"I think it had a lot to do with Alcorn winning this year," says Jamie Griffin. "It's bad that he lost the Classic."
Comegy was 55-35 during his time at Jackson State, finishing this season 8-4.
"The timing right now, it was real bad for the coach I think after a winning season," says Nathan Griffin. "But like I said, it's time for a change."
Jackson State officials agree with that, saying they're looking for a coach who recruits locally and focuses on discipline.
"Consistency comes from outstanding coaching, so I guess we're looking for the consistency," says Jones.
The head coaching job will be posted immediately.
