Sunday, December 29, Jackson Police say they responded to a call about a shooting on Gallatin Street near Amite.
Upon arrival, officers say they discovered the victim later identified as Anthony Barnes had been transported to UMC, where he later died from the gunshot wounds. A preliminary investigation revealed Barnes was the passenger of a vehicle that crashed at Gallatin near Amite Street.
The driver of the vehicle, Johann Haley, was transported to Police Headquarters, where he was interviewed. Police tell us that Haley and Barnes drove to a location on Willow Street, fired several rounds, striking Lenarther Bracey. Bracey reportedly returned fire, striking and killing the deceased.
Johann Haley has been charged with aggravated assault and convicted felon in possession of a firearm; additional charges are pending.
According investigators, Lenarther Bracey will be charged with convicted felon in possession of a firearm upon his release from the hospital. Additional charges are pending; however, the homicide of Anthony Barnes appears to be justified.That case will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s office for Grand Jury review.
