METRO - If you plan to celebrate the New Year with alcohol, emergency officials don't want you to drink and drive.  And, that's why AMR is offering free rides home to people in the Metro.

"My girlfriends and I used to party quite a bit," recalls Denise Marsters.

Marsters is a recovering alcoholic.  Now, sober 20 years, she knows the first-hand affects of alcohol.

"My friend had taken a taxi home.  And, the taxi was hit by a drunk driver.  And, she was killed," explains Marsters.

She wants to save everyone from similar heartache.  Marsters is volunteering her time to help others make it home safely this New Year’s Eve.

"Not everyone who drinks and drives is an alcoholic.  But, everyone who drinks and drives make a really stupid decision that can change the lives of people," continues Marsters.

Last year, more than 200 party-goers took advantage of AMR’s Safe Rides Home program.

"Remember, the designated driver isn't the person who's had the least to drink.  It’s the person who's had nothing to drink.  The bottom-line here is preserving human life," adds Jim Pollard of AMR.

It's a free service offered to anyone who lives as far north as Madison, as far east as Brandon, as far south as Terry, and as far west as Clinton.

"I’ve seen the New Year's Eve tragedies," expresses an AMR worker.

Eva Becklehimer is an emergency medical technician.  She has dedicated her time each year to driving one of AMR’s six 15-passenger vans.

"If I can do this and save one person's life, it's worth it," Becklehimer tells News Channel 12.

AMR will take calls from 11:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. Tuesday night.

The number to call is (601) 368-2323.

When you call, you will need to give your name, location, the number of people in your group, and those rider's destinations.

AMR will only pick up people at bars, restaurants and hotels.  They will not go to private parties.  And, they will not take you to another bar or restaurant to let you continue partying.
