We're covering a developing story out of Leake County today. Several WJTV Facebook friends left us messages about a possible riot at Walnut Grove Prison in the community of Walnut Grove.
We did some digging and confirmed with police in Walnut Grove that there was in fact a fight that took place around 8:30 Tuesday night. Police Chief, Kevin Polk, tells WJTV that several inmates were injured during the fight.
According to Chief Polk, 7 inmates were taken to the hospital for treatment. We're told that some were taken to University Medical Center in Jackson. However, at this point, we do not know the severity of the injuries to those inmates.
We took several phone calls about this story and at one source inside the prison tells WJTV that the fight was more extensive than what authorities are saying.
We are working to confirm those details.
No word yet as to what sparked this fight or how many inmates may have been involved.
We're continuing to cover this story and we will have an update for you beginning on WJTV News Channel 12 at Noon. You can also follow the latest developments by watching for continuous news updates right here on wjtv.com, as well as the WJTV Facebook page.
