Emergency crews respond to a hunting accident in Greenback. The victim was flown to UT Medical Center.
GREENBACK, TN (WATE) - A man died early Thursday morning after being shot in the head with a crossbow while hunting in Loudon County.
Officials with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency said the accidental shooting happened on private property Wednesday evening near Highway 411. The land is owned by the family of one of the men involved.
The victim, William Nathan Norris, 37, of Greenback was flown from the scene by Lifestar to UT Medical Center in Knoxville where he died at 3:24 a.m.
Officials said the incident happened while the two hunters were standing just feet apart. Norris had crossed a fence ahead of his hunting partner when the crossbow was discharged, resulting in serious head injuries.
Officials had initially thought Norris was the one carrying the crossbow, but have now learned his partner was carrying the bow.
Agents said they are treating the shooting as an accident.
