A disturbing story out of Jones county this morning. An investigator with the Jones County Sheriff's Department confirms to WJTV that a woman witnessed a cat being killed by a man. Authorities tell us that man used garden shears to kill the animal. According to investigator, Jamie Tedford, that man told deputies the cat was a stray and had been trying to get into his home for several weeks. The man says he tried to find the cat's owner, but did not have any luck.
The man went on to say the cat clawed at his door and other parts of his house and left scratch marks. The man went on to say he came home one day to find the cat had finally made it inside his house. He said he hit the cat with a milk crate and thought he killed it so he took it outside. Later, he said he found the animal still alive. So, since he did not have a gun to put it out of its misery, the man said he took his garden shears to finish the job.
The woman told the sheriff's department she witnessed the act around Christmas.
Investigator Tedford says that according to a Mississippi statute, if any animal, even a domesticated one, is causing economic loss or personal injury, citizens have a right to kill it.
According to authorities, the cat was already disposed of when police arrived, so there was no evidence as to whether or not it was tortured.
