Rolling Fork Residents Defend Indicted Mayor

Posted: Updated:
One day after pleading not guilty following his arrest on a two count indictment, Rolling Fork Mayor Eldridge Walker is getting strong support from residents of his town.

They say they don't believe the charges against him.

Some tell us they think Walker’s being set up and others say the criminal case is motivated by the mayor's political enemies.

“In my world, he’s prefect,” said one woman who told us she and the mayor are neighbors.

According to the indictment, Walker is accused of using his private company, Walker Construction, to fraudulently get grant money from the federal home loan bank in Dallas.

Authorities tell us Walker claimed the funds would be used to rehabilitate homes in Rolling Fork. They say the money was not used for that purpose.

“I think it’s ludicrous,” said Frederick Williams.

He claims the charges against the mayor could be related to his opponents on the Rolling Fork board of aldermen.

“They been had this thing against Mayor Walker every since he’s been in office. It’s been an ongoing confrontation,” Williams said.

Residents also tell us Mayor Walker often helps struggling families buy gas and groceries.

If convicted, Walker would be forced out of office.
