Long Creek Elementary where a 12-year-old's hair was set on fire
Deputies are called to an elementary school after a student's hair is set on fire. According to an offense report from the Attala County Sheriff's Department, it happened Tuesday at Long Creek Elementary, where, according to family, the 12 year old's hair was set on fire.
Attala County Schools Superintendent Bryan Weaver says two male students are responsible. Weaver says one student brought a lighter to school and another student used the lighter to set the girl's hair on fire in the hallway. A teacher extinguished the fire. The girl was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Weaver says the school does have video of the students burning the girl. The superintendent wouldn't go in to specifics on the video but says this act wasn't an accident. He says the two students will face some type of punishment ranging from suspension, alternative school or expulsion.
The Attala County Sheriff's Department has now turned the case over to youth court.
The school board met Wednesday night to discuss student discipline in an executive session.
