JSU Announces New Football Coach

Posted: Updated:

Jackson State has officially announced the hiring of Harold Jackson as its new head football coach. News Channel 12's Mike Alzamora attended the press conference. He will have a LIVE report on News Channel 12 at Noon.

Jackson State University will announce the hiring of its new head football coach at a press conference at 11 a.m. today. Former JSU and NFL player Harold Jackson is expected to be named to the position.

Jackson, a Hattiesburg native, played for JSU from 1965-1968. The NFL journeyman wide receiver made stops in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, New England, Minnesota, and Seattle until retiring in 1983. He has served as wide receivers coach for the Patriots, Buccaneers, and Saints. Jackson has held coaching positions at colleges across the country, including Kentucky and Baylor.

Jackson will take over the football program at JSU after the firing of former head coach Rick Comegy. The university cited an urgency to recruit locally, a declining fan base, and a need for a stronger disciplinarian as some of the reasons for Comegy's termination.

Comegy led the Tigers to the 2007 SWAC Championship, and to SWAC East Division Crowns in 2012 and 2013, losing the conference title game in overtime both times. He was 55-35 in eight seasons at JSU.
