Mysterious Hole In Walthall County Identified?

Posted: Updated:
A homeowner became concerned about a mysterious hole that popped up in his backyard just feet away from his house.

Walthall county emergency management went to the house to check out the hole and determined it was not a sinkhole.

Instead, Roland Vandenweghe says it may be an old well.

He and the homeowner, Max McKenzie started digging deeper, but stopped due to Monday's rainy conditions.

In the meantime, the area has been secured because of safety concerns.

"It could be, we think 80 feet deep. That's about where the water table is right now." says Vandenweghe

"people fall in them, they're dangerous, so it's god to know they're there. We're going to take care of this issue." adds Mckenzie

The mysterious hole had lots of people interested, some even concerned, like members of the Walthall County Board of Supervisors and a judge.

They all stopped by the home to take a peek.

Plans to continue digging is scheduled for Tuesday, weather permitting.
