UC San Diego Known for Financial Model Creation

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 6, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Rady School of Management at UC San Diego has launched a one-year Master of Finance program that will offer rigorous, hands-on training and cutting-edge methods of analyzing "big data" for financial decision making and risk management. This program is the first of its kind for the Rady School, which also offers a Full-Time MBA, FlexMBA (Evenings and Weekends) and Executive Development courses.

With a rich tradition in empirical and theoretical econometrics at UC San Diego, the Rady School of Management is an ideal place for the development of a new Master of Finance program. Some of the most widely-used financial models have been created from the research of UC San Diego faculty, including the Rady School's own Nobel Prize laureate Harry Markowitz, who will teach as part of the program.

"Some of today's most important tools for risk management and forecasting of economic time-series were developed at UC San Diego and led to the 2003 Nobel Prize in Economics being awarded to UC San Diego faculty Robert Engle and Clive Granger," said Allan Timmermann, Professor of Finance at the Rady School. "This tradition is reflected in the Master of Finance program's focus on time-series econometrics, forecasting and risk-management."

Rady School Dean Robert S. Sullivan noted that the Master of Finance program will lead the development of new educational approaches to the challenges facing the financial sector.

"Given the financial industry's rapid changes, it is essential to provide students with the analytical and practical problem solving skills that will allow them to make significant contributions at financial institutions and regulatory agencies," said Rady School Dean Robert S. Sullivan. "The Rady School's Master of Finance program's emphasis on quantitative models and methods ensures graduates are equipped to develop innovative solutions to the complex problems facing the financial industry."

The Master of Finance is currently accepting application for enrollment. For more information, go to: http://www.rady.ucsd.edu/finance/admissions/
