Wool E. Bull teaches Durham kids about bullying

DURHAM, N.C. -

Wool E. Bull showed off a shy side to kids in Durham today, sharing with them that it was a result of bullying.

The appearance by the Durham Bulls' mascot was part of a "bully busters" program the Durham Bulls kicked off at Lakewood Elementary school. The Bulls are working in conjunction with Durham Public Schools.

The kids saw videos about how Wool E. Bull had been bullied and learned how they could respond in situations like that.

The Bulls had four tips for kids:

  • Talk to a trusted adult
  • Support their friends
  • Support the person being bullied - not the bully
  • Don't duplicate the bully's behavior

"Every single day throughout this country, there are kids that are dealing with this," said Scott Carter, the Bulls' director of marketing. It's a very serious issue and one that can easily be addressed if you know how to handle it."

If kids sign a pledge not to bully and promise to help those who are, then they get two tickets to see a Bulls game.

This is the first year for the effort.

The Bulls are hoping to expand into other counties in the coming years.
