Winter Storm departing eastern North Carolina

Posted: Updated:
The winter storm that brought snow and ice to the southern states and eastern North Carolina is moving up the east coast and dumping up to a foot of snow across the I-95 corridor and into the bigger cities along the eastern seaboard. Eastern North Carolina will see sporadic rain through the day with high temperatures remaining above freezing. An upper level low pressure combined with the return flow from the northerly winds of the surface low pressure moving up the eastern sea board will usher more cold air and precipitation into the east this afternoon and evening. The Highway 264 corridor and north could see a dusting to perhaps an inch of snow this afternoon into evening, around rush hour. Overnight tonight, we dip below freezing which could make for some slick spots on the roads for your morning commute on Friday.

Winter Storm Warning continues for Wayne, Halifax,
Wilson, Edgecombe, Nash Counties until 6 PM tonight.

Preliminary snow totals from across the region on Tuesday:

Half Moon (Onslow County) 3.5"
Arapahoe (Pamlico) 5"
Chinquipin (Duplin) 6.5"
Swan Quarter (Hyde) 5.5"
Okracoke 4.5"
Greenville 4"
Chocowinity/Washington 3"
New Bern 8"
Goldsboro 3"
James City 9"
Fairfield Harbour 9"
Richlands 5.5"
Buxton 4.5"
Englehard 8"

Road conditions across most of eastern Carolina will be improving over the coming days. Call 511 to get general road conditions if you have to head out the door.

There are numerous delays and closings already reported with more coming in. Get Closings and Delays information here.
