Crashes on I-81 causing problems for Buchanan

Posted: Updated:
BUCHANAN -

This morning we begin our investigation into a portion of Interstate 81 that is considered the most dangerous in Virginia.

That portion is in Botetourt County running past Buchanan.

When there are crashes on I-81 traffic is detoured onto Route 11 which runs through the town.

Town leaders say it's happening a lot.

We pulled numbers from VDOT and the town showing that traffic is detoured onto Route 11 an average of four times per month.

It's a dangerous situation that Mayor Larry Hall knows all too well.

"With the heavy traffic a car tried to get out on Route 11 and actually t-barred my daughter and totaled her car," Hall said, remembering the 10 year old crash. "Personally, we've had problems like that."

Coming up tonight on WSLS 10 at 6 p.m. we dig deeper into the problems on I-81, how it's impacting Buchanan and why VDOT says the solution is still years away.
