Raleigh begins to prepare roads ahead of winter storm

RALEIGH, N.C. -

The City of Raleigh Department of Public Works is preparing roads ahead of winter weather this week.

Crew began brining the roads around 10 a.m. Monday and they will continue all day and into Monday night.

Raleigh salt barns have 1,000 tons of salt left, but the City ordered 2,000 tons two weeks ago and they hope to get that salt in Monday afternoon or by Tuesday at the latest.

Raleigh has enough money in the budget to cover 4,000 tons a year without dipping into emergency funds, and so far Raleigh has used between 2,300 and 2,500 tons of salt.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has about 50 trucks on hand in Wake County, and officials are confident they'll get to all the primary roads.

"We have time to go out to all those primary roads that sometimes we don't get to if the storm comes a little quicker they'll work until six or seven o'clock tonight, and then we'll wait and see," said NCDOT spokesman Steve Abbott.

The state budgeted $30 million for snow because in recent years there has been barely any snow. Now officials are prepared to go over that budget.

"We're about at that budget now because the last storm affected all 100 counties. This one is going to do the same so we're going to be over budget when this one is over," said Abbott.

NCDOT said they will make adjustments in the summer.
