New 'wilding' video shows danger, say Hillsborough officials

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

The Hillsborough Sheriff's office showed a group gathered at the Beulah Baptist Institutional Church video of the stampeding, the fighting and the utter lack of respect for law enforcement and fellow fair-goers.

"To say that it was an extremely hazardous and dangerous situation for anybody on the grounds that night, would be an understatement," said Major Tom Feeney.

Hillsborough Commissioner Les Miller organized this event to encourage suggestions to prevent future "wilding".

"We're not here to blame, or try to point fingers as to why it happened, who was to blame. Who was at fault. But we're here tonight to try to make sure it does not happen again," said Miller.

Col. Jim Previtera gave a detailed description of the February 7th events at the Florida State Fair.

He described a mob mentality with multiple fights, deputies assaulted, organized gangs, and vandalism.

Sergeant Tim Lovett was in the middle of it all.

"What you all are seeing here does not touch what we went through out there. You can't imagine what we went through out there," said Lovett.

Some fair goers hid in fear with vendors. Most people who attended Tuesday night's meeting agreed that preventing a repeat will require an large effort.

"We can bring 500, 600 700 deputies out there, we can't arrest our way out of it. The community and the sheriff's office have to work together to solve this problem," said Col. Jim Previtera.

The goal is to have an action plan by May. Between then and now, there will be other meetings. The next one is being hosted by the NAACP.
