Mississippi Lawmakers Eye Plan To Aid Viking Range
The state of Mississippi is proposing to give money to Middleby Corp., the owner of Greenwood's Viking Range, to help pay for an expansion.
The House Ways and Means Committee approved House Bill 1592 Wednesday.
State Sen. Lydia Chassaniol, a Winona Republican, says the money would help finance an expansion of refrigerator manufacturing by Viking. The company has laid off about 175 workers since Middleby bought it for $362 million in late 2012. Under the terms of the bill, the company would have to invest $20 million, hire 120 people and maintain 600 total jobs to get an unspecified amount of money.
Chassaniol says she's comfortable giving Viking money despite the layoffs, saying they were a "pure business decision" and that expansion could allow some rehires.
