Honorable Charles Tillman Appointed Acting Mayor of the City of Jackson
Upon the death of the Honorable Mayor Chokwe Lumumba, Councilman Tillman was unanimously appointed to serve as Acting Mayor of the City of Jackson. Mayor Tillman will serve in this capacity until a successor is elected by the citizens of the City of Jackson, Mississippi. Councilman Melvin Priester, Jr. is serving as President of the City Council and Councilman DeKeither Stamps is serving as Vice President. Each will serve until a newly elected Mayor is sworn in. While serving as Acting Mayor of the City of Jackson, Mayor Tillman shall retain his right to vote on the Council.
According to Mississippi law, within thirty (30) days of the Mayor’s death, the Council shall call a Special Election. The City of Jackson shall make and enter upon the minutes an Order setting a date certain for the Special Election. The election for the Mayor of the City of Jackson shall be held not less than thirty (30) days, nor more than forty-five (45) days after the date upon which the Order is entered.
