NEW YORK, Feb. 27, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Dash is on a mission: to make every car on the road a 'smart car'. Using Dash's smartphone app, just launched for Android on Google Play and soon for iPhone, drivers are able to connect their car to their phone, and analyze their driving behaviors.  The information gathered is used to help the driver improve their driving, making the roads safer, greener, more affordable and more social.

Dash makes your car like KITT, from the TV show Knight Rider.

Using a low cost, self-installed device, called an On-Board Diagnostic unit (OBD II, which retails as low as $10), Dash connects your phone to your car wirelessly via Bluetooth. The device works on any car on the road since 1996.

Dash's product makes driving smarter. Features include:

  • Safety – Dash scores your driving (out of 100), based on behaviors, like hard breaking or over-acceleration. The software alerts you to any engine issues (yes, the car will talk at you). And no more 'Check Engine Light' anxiety – Dash tells you what is wrong in real time, plus the severity and cost to fix at nearby mechanics.
  • Savings – the average American spends $10,000 on driving (AAA). Dash helps save money, by providing feedback on better driving and maintenance that can save 15-20% on your variable costs of gas, repairs and maintenance. Dash shows users where the cheapest gas is nearby, helping users save ($5-$15/tank). Dash estimates that most American drivers could save $1,500 per year.
  • Social – the 'Dash Score' taps into the psychological needs of drivers to prove that they are the 'better driver'. See which friends have 'pole position' with Dash's leaderboard.  Earn 'bumper stickers' that reflect your road personality (e.g. Tree Hugger, Road Warrior).  Dash allows the user to share snapshots of their trips across social networks, like Facebook.

Jamyn Edis, CEO – "At Dash, we passionately believe that we can use technology to improve safety and the environmental impact of driving, all while saving drivers money. Every year in the US, 35,000 people will die on the roads, with nearly 4m injured in accidents. (NHTSA) – that's too many. We can also help drivers save an average of $1,500 per year on running costs, while reducing emissions (EPA).  With a free app and $10 device, it pays for itself within a week."

Dash was recently named a 'Startup to Watch in 2014' by Entrepreneur Magazine.

Before launch, Dash was tested over 18 months, driven 1,000,000 miles, in 30 countries and 1,000s of car models. Analysis of the 'Dash Score' found that drivers with Android phone drove better than iPhones; the West Coast drove better than the East; and in the battle of genders, women were better drivers than men.
